Chapter 1-  Elements of Internet and human senses.

As we Know Human body has five senses, Sense of Vision,  of  Sound, of Smell, of Taste and Touch.

Right now you are reading this blog and you may be also watching online videos,  for this you use only two of your senses your eyes, and ears.

But when you see a cook show you are not able to taste or smell flowers from online shops, similarly when you buy a garment you are not able to feel it.

But the product description, images and videos  visually appeals your mind with some kind of message about these products.

Well, in the same manner when You browse the Internet , the content on the web/mobile grabs your attention by only two of your 5 senses.

Now,  how do we classify the different types of content on internet,
or I prefer to say different Elements of Internet,
as of 2019 the mobile internet has 6 elements, Text, Images, Videos, Sound, Graphics and Animation.

All the information or Content you see when you open a mobile application or a website are a compilation of a few or all of these elements.

Some apps or websites are based on UGC – user generated content, meaning for an example normal people using their smart phones taking a selfie and posting on social sites like Instagram  , facebook or twitter , those pictures and comments on them all are User generated content, while some content like the sponsored advertisements are copyright content , published by professional studios , photographers or web designers.

Websites of News companies like BBC, or entertainment companies like Netflix, Sony or Primevideo or Gaming sites or any Business websites have content developed by professionals.

Before we move ahead to detail understanding in diff aspects of all these 6 elements Text, Images, Videos, Sound, Graphics and Animation as how you find them, use them or create your own element, let me make sure you know how to browse the internet efficiently on your computer or smart phone. Probably you will learn some new tips or simply skip the next 2 lessons.

Let us start with Google chrome, connect your machine to internet,

Now double click the chrome icon on your machine, what you get to see is a screen with an empty address bar on top and a search bar in the centre of the screen- which says “Search google or type URL” in the left and  in right side you see a mic symbol used for “ Search by Voice”,
The url stands for Uniform Resource Locator, it typically looks like http://www.example.com/index.html, where http is a protocol, www.example.com is a hostname and index.html is a file name.

Now lets see how it works,  type www.abc.com directly in address bar on top …we see that the browser connects us directly to the website,

Now lets try again in a new window this time we use the search box in centre and  type only abc.com, this time  we get search results from various websites.

Because your protocol is missing , as well your hostname is incomplete it will show up search results apart from the relevant website, lets go to the last page , what it says in order to show you the most relevant results,  meaning if you type the url precisely the chrome browser will open the website and if your url is incomplete broken or has a spelling mistake then google will take over as a search engine.

Now lets try Search by Voice, click on the mic and say = “www dot abc dot com “ (www.abc.com),This will again show you the same search results.

If you are using the chrome browser but you want to replace the search engine from google to Bling or yahoo you can click on the three dots on top and select settings, under search engine used in the address bar , select from the options you want lets select bing, now lets open a new tab and now we see the bing search has replaced the google search box. Repeat the same change if you want google as your default search engine.

Come back to settings lets quickly check the auto-fill settings and Manage Passwords.

You can add or edit addresses which are normally required in many of sites to sign up or deliver your online purchases. For example:

Under Manage passwords, you can retrieve passwords if saved when you signed up for the first time in a particular website, so if you have enabled the auto sign-in the chrome browser will feed the password automatically in the site when you login again, or if you haven’t enabled and you forgot the password to login your amazon or paypal or any other website,  you can find it here and retrieve it by using password of your computer, Remember it is very important as not to share your computer password with anyone you don’t intent to, else they can easily get your saved passwords.

Why Bookmark, How to Bookmark a webpage or a video and Managing Bookmarks:

Why Bookmark,

There are millions of websites, pages and videos, it is necessary to organize your usefull information which you wish to refer again or share it with someone after some time or in future.

Eg.1 Type or search for themeforest.net, in this website we see thousands of new layouts for websites on diff themes, so if you like them you can bookmark that specific and save

Eg.2 Youtube search for a video on google camera or a food recipe, bookmark this to practice it on a later date.

Let us close all windows and open a fresh window, click on the bookmark manager,

You can edit the title of this website page to your liking, I suggest to keep it short and title it as how you can easily relate to that page when you want.

Eg.1, website layout for my new business
eg.2, recipe of white Pasta

Using Browsing History:

Click the 3 dots in right top next to address bar, and click history,

You will see a list of all the webpages opened in your computer,
to delete on or few webpages select them and click remove from history,
Or else click click browsing data to clear the entire browsing history from your machine,

Searching in History:
if you wish to search a webpage you had viewed a few months back and you have a very long list,
You may first select any one of the relevant webpage and select – More from this site,
the browser will arrange all the pages from that website date wise which makes it easy for you to find the required page.

Private Browsing:

Click 3 dots on right top and select – New Incognito Window

This opens a New Tab  for Browsing in Private mode.
all web pages searched and viewed in Private mode will not be visible in browsing History, Nor the cookies and site data stored in your machine, neither information entered in forms will be saved in the auto-fill settings as discussed earlier.

Anyhow the following might know if you have visited their website:
1] The website owner
2] The internet service provider
3] your company or school if your machine is connected to a server

Now lets visit a website and check whether it appears in history or not, type www.bankofamerica.com in address bar in private mode, once the site is completely opened,
now open a new window, and type www.paypal.com, now again open a new window,

And now click on history, we see paypal.com but not bank of America.com
as it was opened in private mode.

It is advised to do Online banking and financial related activities in private mode for a smooth and safe experience.

Browser Extensions and Themes:

We will discuss Developer tools in website section, Now let us Select Extensions,
Find extensions and themes in the Chrome Web Store,

Themes are decorative panels for your screen, while Extensions are Application for the  web,
On the left panel click Themes, select By Artists and select a rating,
I am selecting Porsche and click on add to chrome,
Now open a new window and you have a bright new window of your choice. To delete go back to settings, Appearance – Theme – set to default.

Now again select 3 dots – extensions, Web store,
Extensions select if not ,Categories select Developer tools, after selecting one you may read reviews before you decide to download the extension. I will select Font awesome Icon finder../  You.Dj Mix free Music , as it may help us for creating our new website.
this will add an icon on top left, click on it will open the application ,, learn it and use it..Thanks
If you don’t like or are done with that extension, right click and remove.

You may scroll to view various categories and view all for more options,
Select a theme and add to chrome.

Some of the most popular browsers as in 2019 are Google Chrome – 1 billion downloads, Safari – 400 million,  UC browser – 300 million

Let us start with Google chrome, connect your MOBILE to internet,

Now tap on the chrome app on your mobile, what you get to see is a screen with a search bar in the centre of the screen- which says “Search or type web address” in the left and  in right side you see a mic symbol used for “ Search by Voice”,

A web address looks like,  www.abc.com and if you don’t know or don’t remember the website, you may type the most relevant words , eg official abc website, or abc broadcasting website, similarly instead of typing you may Search by Voice, click on the mic and say = “www dot abc dot com” or the relevant keywords like; “ abc broadcasting website”.

When you type a complete web address the browser opens that specific website , but when you type a keyword the Chrome browser sends your message to Google search engine – which shows you a long list of most relevant websites, these websites most probably have the same words somewhere in its website title or inside the page content. Remember that the job of a browser is to connect you to a specific web address and not to perform a search task from the world wide web.

Now click on the three dots on top right and click new tab, now type www.abc.com , it will show you the website, now click another tab and type a key word “abc broadcast”. The search engine will show you a list. Scroll down and it further suggests you different Keywords under “ related searches”, You may explore them as well, or take and idea and mix up some new words with your previous keywords, eg, abc on demand latest.

Search Settings

At the bottom of these search results, you see a link of settings, from here you can manage search settings. Here you will see region for search results. You can change the country from available list.
Lets see if we have china. We don’t see China in the list because google search is not operative in China. Now let us try Japan and come back to search results, you may notice slight changes in the list of results from region to region.

Further in Browser settings, If you are using the Chrome browser but you want to replace the Google search engine to Bling or yahoo you can click on the three dots on top and select settings, click search engine, select from the options you want lets select bing, now lets open a new tab and now we see the bing search has replaced the google search box. From centre the search box now appears on top.  Now type ABc broadcast in this box, we see that now the chrome browser has sent your message to bing search engine, and Bing shows you their list of search results. Their results will be somewhat differ compared to google. To change settings of Bling search click on top three horizontal bars, click on settings, click on Country/Region, click on Change your country/region, you see a list of most of the countries, here we can see Peoples Republic of China above Poland, select china.

Click for a new tab, again search abc broadcast, and now bing shows results of what china would most porbably see with that particular keywords. Similarly you may select different countries and get a variety of search results. Now lets quickly change to another country, type a keyword, click on 3 bars, click country, select India.

Also let us change the search back to google, so from top 3 dots, settings, search engine, google. And now select a new tab. Google is back in centre of your phone.

Click on the number in box it will expand all tabs, close which you don’t want or close all.

Auto-fill Payments and Manage Passwords

Click 3 dots, click on Settings lets quickly check the auto-fill Payments and Manage Passwords.

Click Auto Fill Payments, Click on addresses, here you may see multiple addresses , probably you might have used diff addresses for testing purposes, you may delete them  or edit them.
in case you are doing online shopping but want to receive good in another address or send it to your parents or friends, you save them too, click on add address and fill the relevant information.

Click on Cards and add card, fill card details, under billing address you will find only those addresses saved in the Auto fill addresses.

You can add or edit addresses which are normally required in many of sites to sign up or deliver your online purchases. For example:

Under passwords, you can retrieve passwords if saved when you signed up for the first time in a particular App or website, so if you have enabled the auto sign-in the chrome browser will feed the password automatically in the site when you login again, or if you haven’t enabled and you forgot the password to login your amazon or paypal or any other app,  you can find it here and retrieve it by using password of your Mobile phone.

Remember it is very important as not to share your mobile phone password with anyone you don’t intent to, else they can easily get your saved passwords and misuse them.

So simply Click on 3 dots and click on star.

Let us do another Eg., click on new tab, open Youtube , search for a video on google camera app after you find a useful video , click on share, click on the copy link ,
Now open a new tab, and press your finger for a second , a paste button will popup,  click on paste and will show the link of the youtube video, press go, the video page will open, now click on menu and click the star.

Now close all Tabs and open a New tab,  Click on menu, click on the bookmarks,

You can edit the title of this website page to your liking, I suggest to keep it short and title it as how you can easily relate to that page when you want.

Creating Folders in Bookmarks,
Open a new tab, click on bookmarks, you will see all the videos and pages we just bookmarked.
Now what if you 100 food videos , 20 how to do videos and 50 shopping sites and many other bookmarks.
We manage them in folders and sub folders.

Select menu of that specific link and select move. Now create a New Folder, and give a simple title easy to remember, Indian food. Similarly you may create new folders and move the links to respective folders.

Add to Mobile Home Screen:

When you are in really hurry and want to read  blog or website , best is you can add to home screen, from menu, this will create an app like shortcut on your phone. Eg. Open abc.com, menu – add to home screen. Now close all tabs. Now we can see the icon created which will open that page directly. Note: this will not work with videos from youtube app.

Sharing: Having Bookmarks ready in organised manner, you can open a link any time, whether its an App, a website, a blog , a video you can easily open it and Share it from the menu – share option via your most used sharing app, be that whatsapp or fb, twitter or gmail.

Using Browsing History:

But there is a difference between high quality image and an average good looking image,
average image can be produced by smart phone cameras or digital cameras.

While Dslr and mirrorless cameras are used for high quality images.

There are 3 types of images used currently on the web, 2d, 3d image and 360 image.

Some cameras can produce a 360 image and some apps are used to view them like google cardboard, you can download cardboard camera  in your phone take a 360 pic and see them in a vr box.

But we are talking about how to use our images in a website or mobile app.

Diff types of Images. And Webp image format

1] How to produce QUALITY images, YOU may use your phone but you may also try a professional dslr or mirrorless camera for higher quality image, your first presentation can give a long lasting impression. It is always good to take a course on basic photography for operating your camera in manual mode or else You may hire a professional photographer for the same, if you are hiring a professional

Do not forget to collect the raw image files of all pics and full size image and store them in an external hard disk for future applications.

Now when a picture is shot usually it’s a very big size image , so you need to render the pics to small size and save for web. Save for web is an option in several editing softwares.

Example this image shot is raw size is 45mb, but when we render and save in jpeg format it compresses the image and gives a smaller size of say 4mb and a dimensions of 4000×3000 pixels,

But we need to reduce this image to 1920×800 or 720×400 which will reduce the size of image to 1mb .

One of the reason that a normal website takes lot of time to load is because the images are not rendered for web and there are many images , for example this page has 50 images and the average size per image is 2mb than the total image size is 100mb, but as per google chrome browser standards the page should be less than 10 mb, so we can plan to have 5 images each of 1 mb

Use snapseed android app, open an image shot by mobile phone, apply a style of your choice,

In tools use crop or various options as per your need, and then export select export option to save in the pre-configured size.

To configure the export size, click on top 3 dots ( menu) , click settings, click on image size select 800px, then select format quality, select jpg 80%,

Then under export click export, now you see there is a tremendous reduction in file size.

2] how to edit images and maximise for web / webp

3]  webp is new format to further reduce jpeg files . ideal for creating gif animation and still keep the size low.

Your phone may not be having a quality sound recording option, so you need a good microphone or a Sound Recording Device.

See the difference. If using the H1 in open area you will need a wind shield to cut sound of the wind.

For music either you can find many local music artist or instrument players to compose  and record a background music for your video or you can use some softwares like garageband where you can create your own music.
